Montvale, N.J., July 17, 2013 IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants), the association of accountants and financial professionals in business, recently honored several members as recipients of three new leadership awards, granted for the first time this year: the IMA Distinguished Member Award, the IMA Exemplary Leadership Award, and the IMA Exemplary Volunteer Award.

All three awards were announced at IMA’s 94th Annual Conference & Exposition, held in New Orleans, La. in June. Awardees were nominated by their peers and selected by a committee of senior IMA volunteer leaders.

The first award, the IMA Distinguished Member Award, is bestowed on an IMA member “whose successes, exceptional achievements, dedication and professionalism bring honor to IMA, the profession, and themselves consistent with IMA’s mission and core values.” This year, IMA named Dennis R. Beresford, CMA®, CFM, CPA, of Athens, Ga. and Gary M. Cokins, CPIM, of Cary, N.C. as recipients of this award.

Mr. Beresford, an IMA member for more than 50 years, currently serves as the Ernst & Young Executive Professor of Accounting at the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. Previously, he served for 10 years as the chair of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and prior to that, as the national director of accounting standards for Ernst & Young.

Mr. Cokins’ career spans 40 years as an internationally recognized expert, speaker, and author in performance improvement systems and advanced cost management. He was a co-developer, with Dr. David Norton, of the initial research that led to the development of the balanced scorecard. Previously, Cokins served as the financial controller of FMC Corporation and in the area of business development for SAS, a leading provider of enterprise performance management and business analytics software.

The IMA Exemplary Leadership Award recognizes an IMA member who has made contributions in volunteer leadership positions over a period of years and has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and personal expertise. The inaugural Exemplary Leadership Award went to Ronald D. Luther, CMA, CPA, who currently serves as business manager at St. Ambrose Catholic Community in his hometown of Columbus, Ind. Prior to that, Mr. Luther spent many years in senior accounting and finance roles at Cummins, Inc. He has served on the IMA Global Board of Directors for many years and held leadership positions at the IMA chapter and council levels.

The IMA Exemplary Volunteer Award recognizes an IMA member (regardless of length of service or IMA leadership positions held) who “goes beyond what might be expected, demonstrating unselfish commitment and serving as an example of volunteerism for others to follow.” This year’s awardee was Jimmie Smith, CPA, senior manager of Sarbannes-Oxley Compliance for Occidental Petroleum in his hometown of Plano, Texas, where he has served for nearly 40 years. An IMA member since 1974, Mr. Smith has served as president of three IMA chapters, as well as the IMA Texas Regional Council, and on the IMA Global Board of Directors.

Brian L. McGuire, Ph.D., CMA, CPA, CBM, CITP, chair (2012-2013) of IMA’s Volunteer Leadership Committee said, “IMA is pleased to recognize the exceptional contributions of these four distinguished members. Their dedication to the organization and to the management accounting profession serves as a beacon for others to follow. All of us can learn something about commitment and leadership by their example, both from their professional careers and in their unselfish service to IMA. The accounting profession and our organization are better because of their efforts.”
