IMA Announces Recipients of Inaugural Member Leadership Awards

Montvale, N.J., July 17, 2013 –IMA® (Institute of
Management Accountants), the association of accountants and financial
professionals in business, recently honored several members as recipients of
three new leadership awards, granted for the first time this year: the IMA
Distinguished Member Award, the IMA Exemplary Leadership Award, and the IMA
Exemplary Volunteer Award.
All three awards were announced at IMA’s 94th
Annual Conference & Exposition, held in New Orleans, La. in June. Awardees
were nominated by their peers and selected by a committee of senior IMA volunteer
The first award, the IMA Distinguished Member Award, is
bestowed on an IMA member “whose successes, exceptional achievements,
dedication and professionalism bring honor to IMA, the profession, and
themselves consistent with IMA’s mission and core values.” This year, IMA named
Dennis R. Beresford, CMA®,
CFM, CPA, of Athens, Ga. and Gary M.
Cokins, CPIM, of Cary, N.C. as recipients of this award.
Mr. Beresford, an IMA member for more than 50 years,
currently serves as the Ernst & Young Executive Professor of Accounting at
the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. Previously, he
served for 10 years as the chair of the Financial Accounting Standards Board
(FASB) and prior to that, as the national director of accounting standards for
Ernst & Young.
Mr. Cokins’ career spans 40 years as an internationally
recognized expert, speaker, and author in performance improvement systems and
advanced cost management. He was a co-developer, with Dr. David Norton, of the
initial research that led to the development of the balanced scorecard.
Previously, Cokins served as the financial controller of FMC Corporation and in
the area of business development for SAS, a leading provider of enterprise
performance management and business analytics software.
The IMA Exemplary Leadership Award recognizes an IMA member who has made contributions in volunteer
leadership positions over a period of years and has demonstrated exceptional leadership
skills and personal expertise. The inaugural Exemplary Leadership Award went to
Ronald D. Luther, CMA, CPA, who
currently serves as business manager at St. Ambrose Catholic Community in his
hometown of Columbus, Ind. Prior to that, Mr. Luther spent many years in senior
accounting and finance roles at Cummins, Inc. He has served on the IMA Global
Board of Directors for many years and held leadership positions at the IMA
chapter and council levels.
The IMA Exemplary Volunteer Award recognizes an IMA member (regardless of length of service or IMA
leadership positions held) who “goes beyond what might be expected,
demonstrating unselfish commitment and serving as an example of volunteerism
for others to follow.” This year’s awardee was Jimmie Smith, CPA, senior manager of Sarbannes-Oxley Compliance for
Occidental Petroleum in his hometown of Plano, Texas, where he has served for
nearly 40 years. An IMA member since 1974, Mr. Smith has served as president of
three IMA chapters, as well as the IMA Texas Regional Council, and on the IMA
Global Board of Directors.
Brian L. McGuire, Ph.D., CMA, CPA, CBM, CITP, chair
(2012-2013) of IMA’s Volunteer Leadership Committee said, “IMA is pleased to
recognize the exceptional contributions of these four distinguished members.
Their dedication to the organization and to the management accounting
profession serves as a beacon for others to follow. All of us can learn
something about commitment and leadership by their example, both from their
professional careers and in their unselfish service to IMA. The accounting
profession and our organization are better because of their efforts.”
