Johnson & Johnson: A Model for Sustainability Reporting
By Susan C. Borkowski, Mary Jeanne Welsh, and Kristin Wentzel
While no regulations exist requiring U.S. companies to provide stand-alone sustainability reports (SRs), the trend to provide sustainability disclosures continues to grow from stakeholders pressuring for more corporate accountability. With the purpose of providing a framework for other firms to model, the authors conducted an in-depth case study of Johnson & Johnson, which has been issuing SRs since 1993. J&J’s trend has been to broaden its sustainability reporting in ways that increase both value and transparency while fully integrating it with its corporate culture.

An interview with Robert Herz, chairman of the Financial Accounting Standards Board
By Ramona Dzinkowski
The interviewer begins by asking when the convergence of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) will be completed. Robert Herz, chairman of FASB, explains how his group is currently reviewing IFRS as it is written and implemented around the world. He believes the mid-2011 target for a Memorandum of Understanding program likely won’t be met. The conversation then shifts to reporting standards, transparency, and public confidence.
Internal Control: The Lottery’s Ticket to Success
By Janet B. Butler and Cecily A. Raiborn, CMA, CPA
State-run lotteries are a magnet for those who try to win using fraudulent means. Internal controls have to operate at three levels to maintain security: prevention, detection, and correction. The authors review the procedures used by the Texas Lottery Commission, the third-largest state lottery, from the physical production and delivery of the scratch-off tickets to the rotation of the personnel managing the online lottery.
